How to Eliminate General Odour & Smoke Smell from Carpets

Carpets are an essential decor item of your home. However, because of their absorbing nature, carpets very quickly absorb stains, spills, dust, dirt, pollens, and other allergens. Apart from this, you must have noticed that carpets even absorb various kinds of smells. If your carpet is also giving out a bad smell and you don’t know what to do with it then you are at the right place. You just need to give extra time and efforts for that extra cleaning of your carpets to eliminate bad odours from your carpet.

Here we share some tried and tested methods to eliminate some general and smoke related odours from your favourite trusted carpet cleaning and keep it smelling nice and fresh always!

How to Get Rid of General Smells

  1. Work on the Stains –

Before you get down to work on the odours embedded in your carpet, it is essential to clean the carpet of any stains and spills. Blot the wetness with a towel and then use a damp cloth dipped in soap and water mixture to dab the stain. The carpet should be absolutely clean before working on the odours.

  2. Use Baking Soda –

Baking soda is the best thing you can use to neutralize any odour in your carpet. It is also a good idea to mix one portion of baking soda with one portion of Borax. For a scented feel, you can even add essential oil to this mixture. Apply this mixture as a thin layer on the affected carpet.

  3. Let Baking Soda Stay –

You will have to wait for the baking soda mix to sit for a few hours. If it is a really pungent smell then it is best to leave it overnight. Also, remember to keep kids and pets away from this area.

  4. Extract Baking Soda –

Use a vacuum cleaning to extract all the baking soda from the carpet. You will have to empty the vacuum bag once it is full.

  5. Do Deep Cleaning –

If the baking soda mix does not yield desired results then you can make another mixture. Take 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide, 1 teaspoon of liquid soap, ¼ cup of baking soda, and mix them all with 1 litre of water. Test this mixture on a small patch of the carpet (an invisible part). Once the mix is ready, don’t cover it with a lid and remember to put on gloves while using this treatment.

  6. Spray the Solution –

Put the above mixture into a spray bottle and spray it evenly on the carpet. Keep the nozzle open and don’t leave the remaining solution in a closed bottle. Also, do not over saturate the carpet with this mix as it could harm the carpet fibres.

  7. Let it Stay –

Let this mix stay on the carpet for a day.

  8. Soak Excess Liquid –

Soak the excess liquid using one or more towels. And once the excess liquid is gone, let the carpet dry naturally. Wait patiently and once it is completely dry you will be surprised to notice that the odour has gone too.

Dealing with Smoke Odours

Use the following methods for dealing with smoke odours from your carpet:

  1. Use Vinegar/Ammonia –

Take either white vinegar or ammonia and fill it in 2-3 bowls. Don’t overfill the bowls and leave some space at the top to avoid sloshing. Keep these bowls where the carpet with smoke odour is. Both ammonia and vinegar help in breaking down the smoke smell and initiate the odour removal process. However, do not ever mix vinegar and ammonia as it becomes a dangerous gas.

Let these bowls stay for at least a day and see how effectively they work. Keep kids and pets away from these bowls and once it is done, dispose them off.

  3. Use Baking Soda –

Another option is to use baking soda for eliminating smoke odour from carpet. Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet and let it stay overnight. Then vacuum it up. Instead of baking soda, you can even try some odour removing chemical consisting of scented granules. This can be purchased from a nearby store.

  4. Use a Steam Cleaner –

Filled with Distilled Vinegar – Rent a steam cleaner and fill it up with distilled white vinegar as this acidic cleaner is a good odour removing agent. Read the instructions of the machine and carefully run it over the carpet.
